Tees Valley tourism businesses were celebrating last night followed by their success in the first 'North East England Tourism Awards' organised by regional development agency One North East.

The awards which reward the leading individuals, businesses and attractions that contribute to the region's thriving tourism industry were announced last night (Wednesday 19th October) at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland.

The King's Head Hotel & Restaurant in Newton under Roseberry scooped the title of Bed & Breakfast of the Year, 53 tourism businesses right across the region, large and small, including accommodation providers and visitor attractions from Guisborough up to Berwick and across Barnard Castle, Upper Weardale and Kielder had been shortlisted in the North East of England Tourism Awards.

John Holmes, One North East director of regeneration and tourism said: " I would like to congratulate all of our winners on thier success this year.  The standard of entry was so high this year that all of our winners and finalists should be proud of their achievements.

"One North Easts vision is to make North East England a sought after destination 365 days a year "for leisure and business visitors" with activities, attractions, facilities and accommodation that consistently exceed visitor expectations.

"An important part of the North East England Tourism Strategy is the Tourism Awards, which reward and recognise the work of the many people involved, encouraging the continued improvement and raising of standards right across the industry."

The Kings Head Hotel underwent a sympathetic transformation from an original row of 17th Century country cottages into a eight bedroom hotel and offers a very high standard of accommodation.  Customer service is paramount to the business and staff are always willing to help.  The restaurant serves a wide range of dishes, all of which are of a very high quality.  Other awards gained by the hotel include AA Four Red Diamonds, RAC Four Diamonds Silver Award and Welcome to  Excellence.  The Hotel only opened 15 months ago and has already positioned itself as the leading BEd & Breakfast in the North East.

The Kings Head Hotel & Restaurant will now go on to represent North East England in the national 'Enjoy England Awards for Excellence' in April 2006.

Carrier Direct Marrketing, Celedor Radio Broadcasting and Easyjet supported the awards.
